Go Out Into the Flow of Life

A curious adage on his list raises questions. It turns out to be central to his modus operandi.

I empty my basket of preferences.

The “basket of preferences” are things he plans to get done that day. By emptying it, he means he is conscious of his calendar, but not bound by it.

“I go out into the flow of life, allowing new developments to occur. As they do, I respond.”

The expression is not original with Ron.

“The lineage of the term goes back to a man I studied martial arts from, who had studied with Bruce Lee.”

You start out the day noting what you want to get done that day. But don’t fill your “basket of preferences” too full. You might find yourself doing something that is not on your list. If you schedule your whole day, you are not going to have time to do those spontaneous things.

“When a new development arises that has significant value for me, something that outweighs the value of what I had intended, I will do the new thing. So I go out without being locked into any preferences, and just be with the world and the universe, and respond without any expectations of rewards from other people or from situations. Otherwise, I may be limiting what those situations or people might offer me. If I come in with a preconceived agenda, it’s a block. There might be much more I could learn if I was open to whatever possibilities exist, or could come out of the interaction.”

Ron insists that there is a huge distinction between his basket and a time management list. One of the differences is that at the end of the day he is not beating on himself for what he hasn’t done.

“There’s no reason to be guilty, because then I’m violating the very first thing on my list of intentions: monitor my thoughts, and the second, be in the here and now. Guilt is in the past.

“I want to do everything I can to spend my time and awareness in the here and now because that’s where life is. The bigger I can make the present moment, the richer my life is going to be.

“I stay open for new developments and opportunities, improvising within a structure of intent.”
